Serie A: three perfect starts
Roma, Inter and Lazio have won all three of their games.
A round ago six clubs were perfect. Then Milan and Juventus drew 1-1 with each other in Turin, and Atalanta lost 2-1 away at Roma. Half that group went in one round.
Inter are the reigning champions and beat Napoli 3-2 on Saturday. Roma lead the table with ten goals scored and one conceded. Como won 4-1 at Genoa and are up to fourth. Torino won 2-1 at Fiorentina, who sit bottom with no points and one goal in three games. Frosinone beat Venezia 3-2, Cagliari beat Lecce 1-0, and Lazio won 2-1 at Udinese on Monday night. Parma drew with Monza, Bologna with Sassuolo.
Inter play this season with a small tricolour shield sewn above the badge. No English champion carries anything like it. The shield is called the scudetto, which means little shield, and Italian football has used it since 1924. Only the club that won the previous league title wears one, and only for that season.
The word then took over the object. Italians do not say a club won the league. They say it won the scudetto. Inter won their twenty-first in May.
The second mark is permanent. Since 1958 a club wears a star above its badge for every ten league titles it has won. Juventus wear three, Inter two, Milan one.
Next up: Venezia host Fiorentina on Friday 11 September, two of the three sides still on zero points. Lazio play Milan on Saturday, and Roma go to Torino on Monday 14 September.
Save this one. The table changes every round.
