Serie A: a six-way tie at the top
Six clubs have won both of their opening games, and the top of the Serie A table is now a six way tie on points.
Roma went to Lecce on Monday night and won 4-0. Atalanta needed stoppage time to beat Bologna 1-0, through Lazar Samardzic. Inter won 1-0 at Cagliari, Milan beat Venezia 2-0, Juventus beat Parma 2-0, and Lazio beat Genoa 1-0.
Napoli lost 2-1 at home to Como. Frosinone won 3-0 away at Fiorentina, who are in their centenary year and sit bottom with no points and no goals scored.
The table here puts Roma first on goal difference. Serie A does not actually work that way. When clubs are level on points, the first thing the league looks at is the head to head record between those clubs. General goal difference only comes in after that, which is why the order at the top is not really settled yet: some of those six have not played each other.
And if two clubs finish level at the very top of the table, there is no tiebreaker at all. They play a single match to decide the title, at the ground of whichever side is higher on the head to head criteria. In England the first tiebreaker is goal difference, and the season ends with a subtraction.
Next up: matchday three runs from Saturday 5 to Monday 7 September. Fiorentina host Torino on the Saturday, still looking for their first point of the season.
